So I’ve been on a vegetarian diet for about the last four months (Since August). The first month was fine, but then about mid way through September I’ve been having yeast infection symptoms. I thought at first it might be a STD, but I’ve had a check up with my doctor and told her that I might have a yeast infection or a STD. She checked my pH level and said that it was off a little. So she prescribed a pill, which was a single dose. For about a week my symptoms went away. Then they came back. I’ve read that your diet and some soaps can change your pH level. So I changed my body soap to a more pH neutral soap thinking it was that, but the symptoms are still there. My laundry detergent has been the same even before I started getting the symptoms, so I don’t think that it could be a reaction to that. Then I got to think about it may be the lack of protein in my diet. I mostly get my protein from eggs, cheese, soy and beans, but now I’m wondering if that is enough. I would still like to maintain a vegetarian diet, but if I have to I might start eating meat again to get this cleared up.

Being a VEGETARIAN will not cause yeast infections, and it’s actually better for you than consuming meats. However, increasing your yeast intake will. Cut down on breads, and do a little research on which foods contain yeast, and which don’t. Cheese and dairy are definately NOT going to help your problem… Try Morningstar or Boca for protein. Try your hand at tofu and such. If you want to know how to cook it, email me. Excessive sugar intake can contribute to yeast infections as well. I would also suggest taking acidophillus (sp?).
If you’re sexually active, these sorts of infections are common; make sure you’re both clean, and shower often. Don’t use soap inside your vagina, only use a mild soap on the outside. If you douche, don’t do it too often…
It’s not your vegetarianism, I promise. I was a vegetarian for 5 years, and the only times I got yeast infections were the times that I had sex and one of us hadn’t showered that day, or if I was consuming a lot of breads and dairy… Since becoming vegan, I have yet to get one. ^-^ Again, it’s probably related to your diet, but meat will not help you at all. You just need to keep a closer eye on what you’re consuming and be aware of how it will effect your body.
EDIT: oh, I almost forgot– I’m not entirely sure, but I believe that too much soy can contribute to yeast infections as well. Look into different sorts of nuts and such (for instance, trying almond or rice milk instead of soy milk) if you’re consuming excessive amounts of soy… Pasta has protein, too, by the way. ^-^ Just read nutritional labels, it’s a lot easier to get protein than you think. It’s also worth noting that a LACK of protein should NOT cause yeast infections.
