Do brown rice or oats have yeast or wheat in them?
I know this sounds like it may be a dumb questions, but Im starting my cats on a raw food diet which will have small amounts of coked oats and brown rice in it. My one cat is severely allergic to wheat and yeast among 30 (literally) other things and I have to be sure that brown rice and oats do not contain wheat or yeast.
I am not planning to feed the cats strictly oats or rice- just so everyone knows. The bok I bought about raw food diets for cats includes small amounts of these things in addition to mostly meat.

First thing, cats are carnivores, they can not digest veggie protein. It is crule to feed a carnivore on a veggie diet alone.
Rice may have traces of wheat or yeast in it, this is why your supposed to wash your rice before cooking it.
Oats, wheat and rice are all different types of grass, yielding seeds called grain. They are not the same, being different species of plants.
Yeast, on the other hand is a single celled organism that is placed somewhere in between plants and animals. In my opinion it is more like a fungal plant. Nevertheless, it can exist in any type of grain. It is the organism that is responsible for fermentation. That is why it is an essential ingredient in brewing drinks from grain and in leavening bread made from grain.
So to answer your question, oats and rice do not contain wheat unless they are stored or processed in machines that were used for wheat as well as the other grains. However, there is no guarantee that the oats and rice do not contain small amounts of yeast. The dry, unprocessed grain should be okay. Typically fermentation only happens when the grain gets wet. Of course that would be your concern for your cat. The moisture inside the cats digestive system could possibly trigger the yeast and cause colic.
Here is another suggestion, cats are carnivores and a diet of lean meat would be healthier than grains.
Read the labels, some brown rice mixes may contain wheat. Both may produce a substance like gluten…but I am not sure about that so I would check online about the diet intolerances.
Hm. Cooked oats and rice aren’t raw, for starters. Neither of them contain wheat or yeast though.
A raw food feline diet should ideally be made up of meat, fur, and bones.
