He has had several trips to the vet for ear cleaning fluid and ear medicine. We have done that without any results. The vet mentioned changing his diet but we haven’t tried that yet.

Then change his diet,
or put him to sleep if that doesent work.
Dogs shouldent be in misery just because the owner lieks to have a dog.
I’m a vet tech, and usually if one medication isn’t working, then we switch to a different medication. It sounds though, like your vet thinks it’s allergies that are causing the continuing problem. Changing diets could work, IF it’s a food allergy, there are all sorts of allergies out there. Good luck, with allergies, if can be a life long problem.
Try using tea tree oil. It works well to prevent ear mites too.
Getting to the root of the problem is the best course of action. In the dog’s case that is probably diet.
I have had to treat one of our dog’s in the past for the same thing. You might try Monistat, available in your pharmacy.
I agree with Astro but if there is not enough air flow around the ear or if the ear canal is deformed the infection might never clear up. A relative of mine had a coon hound who had this problem in both ears. The vet suggested having his ears cropped and it worked really well. The infections were gone in 1 week!! The crop wont look like a "normal" crop the ears will be much shorter. This is only a last resort but talk to your vet and see what he says. Ear infections can lead to deafness so try to get this cleared up ASAP.
This is the only instance in which I think ear cropping is a good choice. For cosmetic reasons ear cropping should be banned.
we have a german sheppard with bad ears-smelly.since you-ve already it to the vet and had the ears washed.i would get the ear solution from the vet and do it yourself.everyday we use an old type handkerchief to get the muck out.so the vet says change the diet.do it.we had to.helps alot.there alsop can be an underline problem like fleas, ear mites.they’ll probably end up wanting to urinalasis or blood.we found out that our dog had a thyroid problem.infact we go back today for blood check to see if this new diet is getting her to where she is suppose to be.so the ear thing problem was contributing to the throid problem.so we change her food and she’s alot better.it does get expensive we have to use to different kinds of food.we have iams and perscription.we use half and half at every meal.well good luck
Oh my god! Please don’t put the dog to sleep because of an ear infection. People like that shouldn’t have pets.
I have vet tech experience. The best solution is to clean them daily. Clean with a tissue with your finger, get in the grooves but don’t go down the ear canal. You can hurt them. If you have ear cleaner, use it. Oti-Calm works awesome. Yeast infections occur in the ears because there is moisture being trapped from the ear flap. That’s ok, just clean the ears out daily. Good luck!
