On a diet, does WHAT you eat matter?

By admin | Jan 11, 2010

Here’s an example:

Unhealthy Diet :

Breakfast:
Doughnut (330 calories)

Snack:
3 hershey kisses and a green apple (100 calories)

Lunch:
Wendy’s spicy chicken burger (440 calories)

Dinner:
Sandwich with salami (300 calories)

Total: 1290

HEALTHY diet:

Breakfast:
Fiber One Cereal w/ non-fat milk (205 calories)

Snack:
Small green apple (36 calories)
Handful of raisins (130 calories)

Lunch:
Lots of green beans (approx. 150 calories)
Tuna (70 calories)
Fried egg (70 calories)
Special K bar (90 calories)

Snack:
2 pineapple cups (120 calories)

Dinner:
6 rice crackers (120 calories for the thin and square kind)
Marmite (yeast extract spread, about 20 calories)
Small green apple (36 calories)
One cup of baby carrots (50 calories)
Cup of tea with milk (23 calories)

Evening snack:
100-calorie snack pack of some kind, e.g. pretzels

Total: 1220

So my question is, would you lose the same amount of weight on diet 1 than on diet 2 (with the same amount of exercise)?
Please explain.
Thanks

There is no really simple answer for this…for the most part, calories are calories. But, some fats you eat can be used directly by your body, and not burned. But since your body cannot manufacture them on its own, a similar fat must be burned for calories instead of used. This creates a net difference in caloric burn. The same can be said of simple vs. complex sugars. If you eat a tbs sugar, your body can simply process those calories at little cost. Eating complex sugars causes your body to work for the calories a bit, causing a net change in calories consumed.

Eating the better food, balancing your diet, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and avoiding processed foods is best. Taking it easy on red meats and aiming for lean protein, while taking in healthy plant fats is good, too.

Since you are going to restrict calories, you have to make sure you get the most bang for your bite. If you eat junk your body will not function properly and go into survival mode and hang onto every calorie. If you eat healthy, your body will be ok and release extra fat.

Diet One may have similar kcals, but Diet 2 will stop you feeling hungry because you are still eating plenty. Also in Diet 1 there is a lot more fat in the diet than Diet 2, so your body will convert more of the food into fat.
So on Diet 2 you will lose more weight!
Stick with Diet 2 and keep on being creative so you don’t get bored!
    Hope this helps :) x

It’s possible, but it’s not a good idea. Health is just as important as weight.

As you can see, you get to eat more on the healthier diet. You will feel more full because you will also get more vitamins, fiber, etc. Unless you are already eating a ton of calories, I think exercise is more important to losing weight.

Counting calories like you did is bordering on obsessive behavior. Controlling your diet that strictly causes most people to binge at times,. If you are obese, see your doctor for a realistic plan for losing weight.
