What can I use as an alternative to yeast when making bread?

By admin | Jan 6, 2010

I’m starting to suspect that my husband has a yeast sensitivity. Every time he eats something with yeast (he’s on a gluten free diet and I make him gluten free bread) he ends up sick. I’m in need of an alternative to yeast when I make a bread mix in our bread machine. Thank you!

There’s sourdough - which is a starter, I don’t have a tried n true one, you may want to google it.

May want to check out if he has a candida overgrowth, and go to a health food store

(my relative in similar situation, but just gives him a bad cold type symptoms)

I make breads free of gluten, and yeast as well as free of dairy, eggs, xanthan gum and chemical leaveners. I combine old fashioned sourdough technique with simple gluten free ingredients and have created tasty bread with great texture and great shelf life. You can see my starter recipe and first successful loaf bread on my blog, http://glutenfreesourdough.blogspot.com/2009/03/gluten-free-dairy-free-sourdough-bread.html, or if that link fails, glutenfreesourdough.blogspot.com. I also sell an Ebook, The Art of Gluten Free Sourdough Baking, from my website, http://www.food-medicine.com. These breads utilize the yeast from the air and on the grain but since it is a natural yeast it normally does not cause any reaction to sensitive people. The flours become highly digestible through the sourdough process making them suitable for sensitive digestive systems. Good Luck, you can bake bread that your husband will enjoy and feel good from. sharon
