What ingredients should I look for and/or avoid, when choosing dog food (kibble)?

By admin | Nov 27, 2009

What brands are safe and good for my puppy? I have a 8 week old pug puppy and I’ve bought Eukanuba (small breed, puppies). I’m living in India and there are not many options of brands around, so Eukanuba seemed to be fine. But I was reading the label, and the list of ingredients is exactly the following: Chicken By-Product Meal,Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, animal fat, Fish Meal, dried beet pulp (sugar removed), Chicken Digest, Dried Egg product, Brewers Diet yeast, Salt, Flax Meal, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins and Minerals ("various"), DL-Methionline.
Some of them sound so nasty! So much "meal" and "artificial sounding" ingredients! Is it ok? Is Eukanuba a good brand? Among other brands (preferably sold internationally), which ones are the best??
to "Fields of Gold": Since you offered, these are the other brands I’ve seen available here in India: Pedigree and Pro Pett Wellness Nutrition. This last one, I bought once a small package, to try, and I just went to check in the kitchen, cos I kept the package, it lists "chicken meat", and and "chicken liver" as 1st and 2nd ingredients. This should be better then? Anything else I should look for to absolutely AVOID?

Eukanuba is not a food I would ever choose for my dogs. It had a very bad press not so long ago because of the way in which the food was manufactured and the ingredients it contained.
Try and find a food where the main ingredient is Meat and avoid, if you can, corn and wheat. A lot of dogs are allergic to Gluten in their diets so it is better to avoid it. If a food contains too many additives and colourings this can make the dog hyper.
When it states Chicken By-Products this means that it’s not made from pure chicken just all the old bits that are normally tossed away.

I have no idea what is available to you in India. Perhaps if you could list the foods you can actually buy there we could give you an idea of which are the better choices for you. I would definitely give the Eukanuba a No No!

Try to avoid wet dog food because it makes him have dyaria. I feed my dog Royal Canine and its very healthy for them. it’s reccomended by my vet. you buy it depending on the age. like my dog is ten moths. but try to avoid changing his food constantly or else he may get sick. put on halve the bowl the food ur giving him now and the other side the Royal Canine. Good Luck!!

Corn meal, fish meal and chicken digest sound bad. I suggest you look for other brands.

Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance is a great healthy food. They have allergy free and grain free formulas. You have to be very careful because a lot of the big name brands have poor ingredients. When you change your dog’s food do it over a week and gradually reduce the old dog food while increasing the new dog food. It is important to gradually change their food to avoid your dog getting diarhea.
